IN THE MARGINS

Our ongoing series In the Margins is an online programme showcasing the beautiful work created by our students during the Other Cinemas film school. In response to a monthly theme, we will invite a student or group of students to share their films and engage them in a discussion around the inspirations and approaches that shape their work towards the end of the month-long screening period. This programme attempts to demystify the film school, showcase the work of our brilliant students, as well as open up discussions around their films to our wider, online community.

The title In the Margins speaks to a marginal condition that black and non-white filmmakers experience within the industry as well as the conscious choice to occupy a space on the contours of it. It describes both a fate and an intention that have shaped the work of Other Cinemas to challenge the race and class gap in film as well as dwell in the wild possibilities of the liminal and in-between, the boundaries between worlds, the spaces outside of institutional imaginaries, the marginalia in the scheme of a different image and film community. We’re excited to bring some of the work our students have created within this space to you.

March’s edition of the programme will be available soon. Follow us on instagram to stay up-to-date with new additions to the series.
